I know that these mirrored overlays have a certain obviousness about them, but this does not detract from the fact that they are beautiful in an abstract sense and they stimulate the viewer to 'see' things in them.

The technique is to duplicate the layer, flip horizontal, blend via multiply and bring up the visibility via a levels adjustment layer

This was a difficult walk and a difficult set of photos. The mist was quite heavy, in fact I was soaked through after a three hour walk. And, of course, it meant that the camera recorded things as extremely grey, low contrast and low density of colour. All shots in the open air had +1 exposure compensation and all those under cover had -1 exp comp.

This shot has just had a small amount of levelling to tighten up the 'black' values.

This is a lovely early morning shot at Arisaig on the West coast of Scotland. I have posted my original version of this before, but I recently reviewed it and reconverted it from the RAW file in order to give it a better balance and a bit more saturation. There is an overlay of a further saturated and blur copy with a reduced opacity to 30%.

From big acorns grow.

This was an interesting piece to construct. I had the image in mind when I started so it was just a case of searching through DeviantArt and SXC for the right stock to use.

I started with the soil in the bottom third, overlaid a shot of the root system and then inserted the acorn. I used masking to bring the roots through to look as if they were wrapping over the acorn and then painted in shadows to give the acorn and the roots a realistic three dimensional look.

Next I added the tree, grass, horizon and sky all from one shot. Although it is not prominent, I have overlaid a second tree (a winter shot without leaves) to give an overall more dense and structural feel.

The next stage was to convert it all to black and white using an adjustment layer and then give it a slight tint with a warming (orange) photo filter. Next I over laid the original colour shot of the tree and masked it so that only the grass and the horizon were visible. Finally, I overlaid an grungy texture in order to 'age' it and vignette it.

Quite a nice effect and a successful realisation of the image that I had in my mind.

I have been exploring some new approaches and techniques, of late and I would like to take off in a new direction in the area of portraits. This particular pic is just stock that I downloaded from SXC so does not benefit from any special insight into the model's personality.

A very useful technique that I have recently discovered is very simple and involves making a selection (of a particular part of the picture that needs a colour or a texture etc) and, in the select menu, saving the selection. This means that I can reload that selection at any time and even invert it so that I can get perfect joins between different parts of the picture.

This has really simplified the process especially with pictures like TEACHERS below where there are 36 sometimes interlocking layers.

I used to own a superb camera - a Roleiflex 3.5T that took 2.25 inch square negatives. Stupidly, I traded it in for my first Canon EOS 650. What I would give to get that quality back again.

This was me at Nunhead Cemetery, experimenting with the self-timer as it was called (a tiny piece of clockwork back then).

I used to pay my way through college by taking on jobs like wedding photography. I can't remember how I was introduced to this couple, but I do remember them being very nice. What I remember most was the bride's mother hanging in there with grim determination but was absolutely unable to break into a smile at any point during the proceedings - even for the family photographs.
